Custom Glass Around the House Beyond the Windows


Glass work in a house is usually thought of as windows, and windows are only part of it. A considerable amount of what a glass shop makes is everything else: shower enclosures, mirrors, tabletops, shelving, cabinet inserts, and railing panels.

These share a defining characteristic. They are made to measure, they cannot be adjusted after fabrication, and the measuring is the difficult part.

Shower enclosures

The most common custom glass project in a house, and the one with the most variables.

Framed enclosures use metal around the perimeter and can accommodate some variation in the opening, which makes them more forgiving and less expensive. Semi-frameless reduces the metal. Frameless uses heavy tempered panels with minimal hardware, and it is the most demanding to fabricate and fit.

Frameless enclosures need thicker glass, because the panel is doing structural work rather than sitting in a frame. They also need proper anchoring into blocking behind the tile, which is something to establish during construction rather than afterwards.

The critical point with any of them is that bathroom openings are rarely square or plumb. Walls lean, tile surfaces are uneven, and floors slope toward the drain by design. A frameless panel cut to nominal dimensions will show a tapering gap.

This is why templating rather than simple measurement is standard for frameless work.

Mirrors

Custom mirrors solve the problem that standard sizes rarely suit a specific wall or vanity.

Edge treatment is the main choice. Polished edges are clean and contemporary. Bevelled edges catch light and read more traditional. Framed mirrors are a separate proposition.

Bathroom mirrors need appropriate backing protection, since ordinary mirror in a humid environment can deteriorate at the edges over time.

Large mirrors need proper fixing, and the weight is frequently underestimated.

Tabletops and surface protection

Glass tops protect timber surfaces and are used on their own for tables and desks.

Tempered is standard for anything that could be struck or that people sit at, and edges should be polished rather than raw.

Corners are typically radiused slightly, both for safety and because a sharp corner on glass chips readily.

Thickness depends on span and support. A large unsupported area needs considerably more thickness than a top resting on a solid surface.

Shelving and cabinet glass

Glass shelving inside cabinets and on walls needs tempering and appropriate thickness for the span and expected load.

Cabinet door inserts can be clear, obscure, textured, or seeded, and the choice changes the character of a kitchen considerably for a modest cost. Replacing solid door panels with glass in a few upper cabinets is a common small project.

Railings and partitions

Glass railing panels are structural safety elements and are governed by code requirements covering glass type, thickness, and how the panel is captured or fixed.

This is not an area to improvise. Laminated glass is frequently required for railings precisely because it stays in place if it breaks.

Why measurement dominates

The single constraint running through all of this is that tempered glass cannot be cut, drilled, or notched after tempering.

Every dimension, every hole for hardware, and every notch must be specified before fabrication. An error means a new panel, not an adjustment.

Older houses compound this, since almost nothing in them is square, plumb, or level. Templates made from the actual opening are how non-rectangular and out-of-square work is handled.

Practical guidance

Decide hardware before ordering, since hole positions are part of the fabrication.

For shower enclosures, discuss the enclosure with your contractor before tiling, so blocking can be installed where anchors will land.

Expect lead time. Custom glass is fabricated to order, and tempering in particular is a process rather than a cut.

And be realistic about openings in older buildings. A frameless enclosure in a genuinely out-of-square opening may need a different approach, and knowing that at the design stage is better than discovering it at installation.
